Description

Swimmers Ear (acute otitis externa) is a painful condition resulting from inflammation, irritation and water trapped in the ear. This commonly affects swimmers. The cause is often moisture trapped in the ear canal resulting in inflammation, irritation and a feeling of “blocked” ears. This can be caused by bathing , showers , swimming or a moist environment.

Other Factors that may cause swimmers ear include:

  • Contact with bacteria that may be present in hot tubs or polluted water
  • Excessive cleaning of the ear canal with cotton buds or other items
  • Contact with chemicals like hair spray or hair dye
  • Damage caused by irrigation of the ear to remove wax
  • Skin conditions affecting the ear

What are the Symptoms of Swimmers Ear?

  • Itching and pain
  • Sensation that the ear is blocked
  • Decreased hearing
  • Pain that may spread to the neck and face

Treating Swimmers Ear

Allow the patient to lie down and place 6-8 drops of Ear Cleanse into in the ear. The patient should remain lying down for a few minutes to allow the drops to work. Ear Cleanse drops are safe when used correctlyIf Swimmers Ear remains untreated, complications such as hearing loss and reoccurring infections may result.

Tips

Dry ears are unlikely to become infected. Keep ears free of moisture during swimming or bathing. Use ear plugs whilst swimming. Have ears cleaned regularly if they are itchy or have excessive wax. Use Ear cleanse drops , as a precaution , after swimming and bathing if prone to ear conditions. Never use a cotton bud to clean the ears. It forces debris and wax further into the ear canal which may result in an infection/irritation.
